Residents and council workers who have made a difference to the lives of others and the city were officially recognised at a special presentation held on Thursday night. Citizens were nominated for their accomplishments, dedication and bravery while council employees were put forward for going beyond the call of duty in their work.
Awards were given to nearly 60 individuals and organisations. Councillor Matthew Evans, leader of the council, said: "The Extra Mile Awards formally recognise the many individuals and groups of people who have clearly gone the extra mile in their everyday lives.
"Some of the recipients may well say that they were just doing what they had to do, with no thought to the benefits for others, but we think they deserve it.
"The very varied activities that individuals and groups have undertaken demonstrates what caring people we have living in the city.
"Their efforts are what make Newport the place it is."
